What is it?

An electronic module that can be used to give new life and more usefulness to an old (or new) musical box or jewellery box

It does include

• speaker
• SD card loaded with a few tunes, I will take a request for a custom one
• headers for switch / battery / charging module
• firmware (not open source, please don't ask) and musical box samples (ditto)
• documentation of the music format. It doesn't play back audio files but uses samples recorded from my own box. See video.

It does NOT include

• musical box
• microswitch / reed switch
• battery or charging circuit (add your own module if needed)
• source code

Why did you make it?

I love ballerina musical boxes. However, if the mechanism still works and the comb isn't broken then they're usually limited to a single tune, and maybe only a short portion of the tune. I wanted to be able to load custom tunes as I wished, and for those to be longer tunes with a wider range of notes.

This is very much a hobby project. I love my box and I don't plan to convert further boxes. Therefore, due to minimum quantities when ordering PCB and PCBA, I have some spares, which I'm offering at cost of materials. Maybe you'd like to convert your own musical box, maybe with a custom tune.

What makes it special?

The playback works way better than I'd hoped and it's actually very nice to hear whenever you open the box for your jewellery.

For US, the import tariff is paid and your parcel will bear the PDDP logo to indicate that and should be waved through customs without delay or further charge.

For EU, VAT is collected at checkout for orders below 150 Euro and sent with an IOSS number. For EU orders above 150 Euro, this currently varies by country, you may or may not pay this at checkout, so you may be asked for it before delivery.
