This is a tiny gamepad breakout board that makes it easy to add game-style controls to any project. It combines an analog joystick with a set of push buttons and exposes all the signals through standard 0.1" pins.

Features

  • Analog joystick with X and Y axes
  • 5 push buttons: A, B, START, SELECT and joystick button
  • Standard 0.1" (2.54 mm) pins, breadboard friendly
  • Compatible with 1.8 V, 3.3 V and 5 V boards
  • Compact size: 56 x 33 x 16 mm

In the box

  • 1x Gamepad board, already assembled, with the joystick attached
  • 1x 9-pin, 0.1" header strip (straight)
  • 1x 9-pin, 0.1" header strip (right angle)

The headers are unsoldered, so you can choose the connector style that best suits your project.

Pinout

Pin Signal
1 VCC
2 GND
3 JOY X
4 JOY Y
5 BTN A
6 BTN B
7 BTN START
8 BTN SELECT
9 BTN JOY

How to use

  1. Connect VCC and GND to your board's power rails.
  2. Connect JOY X and JOY Y to analog inputs.
  3. Connect the BTN pins to digital inputs. Any unused button pins can be left unconnected.

No dedicated software library is required. Simply read the joystick's analog values and the button states using your microcontroller's standard ADC and GPIO functions.

Joystick calibration

The joystick outputs an analog voltage between GND and VCC. When centered, the output is approximately VCC/2, but the exact center and range can vary slightly from one joystick to another.

For simple applications, calibration may not be necessary. For the best results, you might want to calibrate the joystick once in your software:

  1. Leave the joystick centered and record the JOY X and JOY Y readings. These are your center values.
  2. Move the joystick fully in each direction and record the minimum and maximum values for each axis.
  3. Use these values in your code to map the joystick readings to the range you need. You can also add a small dead zone around the center to prevent unwanted movement when the joystick is released.
